13:23 < conseo> mcallan: you mentioned parallels between engineering and art. any prominent studies around that? i only know hegels/adornos qualification of mathematics, which dismisses them as timeless and static (aka not up on par with dialectics) 
13:33 < mcallan> conseo: in English, "art" properly refers to all artificial creation, so it encompasses fine arts (sculpture, poetry, music composition, etc) as well as (what they used to call) the "mechanical arts", which includes engineering. The common element of all such art is creativity - putting something new in the world, or bending the world into a new shape according to one's will. This as opposed to science or philosophy, where we merely study the world and do not touch it. There must be stuff written on this topic, but I have never read it.

"kunst" in german mostly relates to fine arts, while the adjective "künstlich" is similiar to artificial (e.g. plastic is "künstlich"). but i can't recall "mechanische künste"... this root might exist though, since mechanics have been historically tight to arts (at least when e.g. having a look at renaissance like leonardo da vinci)
